Deadlands: Characters

Jebediah Crook

A deserter from the Confederate army, Jebediah fought, at the tender age of 14, at Antietam where he lost two older brothers, Josiah and Joshua .  Always tall for his age, he had written ’18’ on the soles of his shoes, in common with many underage soldiers of the time, thus being able to truthfully answer, “I am over 18,” when questioned by his recruiter.

Though raised a God fearing Baptist, he quickly saw too much death for his young mind – indeed, most minds – to take and, after the slaughter at Sharpsburg (Antietam), turned away from God completely.

Eventually deserting from the army, he took to the life of a drifter. Before too long he began styling himself a preacher, so as to better ingratiate himself to the townsfolk he visited on his travels. He is a Godless man, who only uses his childhood knowledge of the bible to insinuate himself into a community before moving on.  He isn’t malicious, often offering succour where he can, but his prayers are empty.

He is typically a loner pistoleer and has learnt to survive in the wild. He enjoys a game of poker and a spot of gambling – he’s become something of a card sharp since having learnt to play Holdem with his brothers and the rest of their company – and likes a drink. In fact, turned insomniac due to the recurring nightmares of war that plague him, he relies on drinking heavily in order to sleep and, as such, sleeps heavily, albeit restlessly.  His reliance on alcohol renders him a functioning alcoholic and he always ensures he’s got a bottle or two stashed away, lest he get the shakes.

He prefers to come and go as he pleases, but occasionally gets drawn into events due to his assumed persona.

Appearance-wise, Jebediah could be taken for an imposing figure, being fairly tall, rangy and black clad, bar the priestly dog collar at his throat, and the big six-gun that sits comfortably at his hip.  His face, though not unattractive, has a gaunt and careworn aspect and his raven black hair is shot through with grey.

He doesn’t have much in the way of possessions, but his most prized are his Peacemaker, called “Peggy,” and a battered deck of playing cards which belonged to Josiah before his death.  He’ll often play a few rounds of Klondike of an evening while attempting to drink himself into a stupor

Reverend Allen

The Reverend Allen, stands at 5 feet and 11 inches tall, he is lean and wiry. He has a long face with brown-grey eyes, a prominent scar runs under his left eye, almost looking like a grizzly teardrop. He sports a salt and pepper beard which is mostly a dirty grey colour. He has collar-length hair which is dark brown, shot through with grey. On his head sits a black Homburg hat. He wears a white, high stand collar dress shirt with a black necktie, over which is a double-breasted waistcoat – black of course. The coat he wears is a black brushed cotton frock coat Black canvas frontier trousers with bracers to hold them up. On his feet are brown, two-tone wingtip boot.

The Reverend, for as long as he can remember, has known that he has been chosen to promote the good work of The Lord. As a young boy he found that his connection with The Lord was miraculous in nature. When his brother took sick of the pox, the young Reverend prayed for the lord to take away that sickness and before his very eyes, those prayers were answered and the pox vanished, leaving behind a hale and hearty young ‘un, with not a sign that illness had visited the boy. The Reverend does not feel that he has drum in to everyone he meets, how The Lord should be followed, he believes his actions and those bearing witness to the miracles which The Lord performs through him, will be enough for people to follow the path of virtue.

Wolf (Caine)

“Where is Wolf”?
“He is hunting the last of the reavers”
“With his pack”?
“No chief he is alone, it is believed he will have the last of them by sunrise, he is smarter and more stealthy than the reavers, he will have no mercy for them”

Wolf has many names, ‘Whisper like the Winds’, ‘Wolf the Slayer’, and many more, ‘Caine’ is the name he has taken amongst the white people of the Weird West.

Wolf is a member of the Creek tribe, part of the Coyote Confederation.
Trained by the best Creek warriors and Scouts from an early age he was a natural at survival, tracking, hunting and killing, no matter the prey.

The spirits of the Earth are a big part of Wolf’s beliefs, he is always looking for signs to guide him along his way, this, with his old ways vow, is his way of life.

Wolf is of medium height with long hair, good looking – so his wife says.
He wears hardened tan leather trousers and jacket, soft moccasins and feathers adorn his hair. He carries a shield and spear both with his tribal markings when riding.
All his weapons are bone edged, none of that pale skin steel!
When on foot he carries the terrifying weapon, known as ‘That which splits the wind’ a mighty tomahawk which is an ancient relic of the tribes, all bone handle and blade. It is believed to be imbued by or containing the spirits of the old Shamans.
Wolf had tattoos over most of his body and face until ‘the incident.’ Now only a tattoo symbolising the Earth Spirits remains on his back.

Wolf has been tasked with finding out what is happening in the west and why the spirits have awakened.
He has been given ‘That which splits the wind’ to aid him in whatever it takes to complete his mission.
